18 Stream Teams
|
|
Each stream team, consisting of 3 to 5 members, monitors sites once a
month using the Lamotte water quality field test kit. The seven physical
parameters monitored are: air temperature, water temperature, pH,
hardness, alkalinity, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. During the summer
months, May through September, teams monitor for e coli bacteria
using the Easygel Coliscan method. Quarterly teams sample for nutrients:
phosphorous and nitrates.

5 Enbayment Teams
|
Enbayment teams monitor the five major waterheads that feed into Lake
Guntersville within the geographic boundaries of Marshall County.
Teams go by boat to their sampling location. They measure air
temperature and secchi disk depth, then using a submersible water
canister gather water temperature and dissolved oxygen data at the
surface, 1.5 meters below the surface and 1 meter from the bottom for a
lake profile.

3 Biological Teams
|
|
Biological teams sample for aquatic "bugs" or benthic
macroinvertebrates in streams. Individual bugs which have differing
tolerances to pollution serve as "mini-meters" of water
quality. The "health of the stream" story they tell is a good supplement
to the moment-in-time data collected monthly.
