Citizen's Judicial Academy: 

     RSVP is now taking applications for the 10th Citizen Academy Class. The class will meet each Wednesday from 8am to 12 noon March 7 - May 2.   Sponsored by the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office.  Over 40 law enforcement speakers make this year’s academy a truly educational event.

     Due to the sensitivity and confidential nature of the law enforcement agencies, applicants must have a criminal history check.  If you are interested in this once in a lifetime experience, please call 256-571-7734 at RSVP.  Space is limited.  Don’t wait until it fills up, come by  today and fill out an application.  Or download this application, fill it out, sign and return to RSVP, 1805 Gunter Avenue, Guntersville, AL 35976 in person or by mail by February 27th.

  • RSVP Spring Overnight Trip - Chattanooga April 19-20

         Chattanooga has something for everyone - a vibrant Tennessee riverfront; an exciting Tennessee Aquarium experience; the South's most renowned and unique landmark, the Delta Queen; Bluff View arts district where there are stunning views of the river and the surrounding mountains, and the Incline Railway at Lookout Mountain.

         Travel from RSVP to Signal Mountain where you will ride the world’s steepest passenger railway.  Known as “America’s Most Amazing Mile,” the Incline’s trolley-style cars climb at a breathtaking 72.7% grade – straight up!  While you’re up top, enjoy the panoramic views from the observation tower.  Then, after you descend, explore historic St. Elmo, where a wonderful collection of unique shopping and dining experiences await you!

         Lunch on-your-own in St Elmo Historic District,  many of the buildings from the late 19th century have been preserved.

         You will overnight as a guest on the world renowned Delta Queen.  Moored in Chattanooga, this grand lady has entertained Presidents, foreign dignitaries and a multitude of celebrities.  Why not allow her to entertain you?

         The Delta Queen and her identical twin the Delta King - called the million dollar boats - were fabricated from 1924 to 1927 on the River Clyde Scotland and assembled that same year at Banner Island Shipyard in Stockton. The paddlewheel shaft and the cranks were forged at Krupp Stahlwerke AG, Germany. The boats were completed on May 20, 1927.

         Supper will be a Dinner Show, "Mystery at the TV Talk Show".  Meet crazy characters.  Witness and help solve a crime.  Unlimited Italian food, beverages and dessert.

         Imagine awakening to the smells of freshly brewed coffee and a Delta Queen breakfast buffet that features something for everyone. 

         Then you’re off  on a city tour of Chattanooga that will include a visit to the highest-rated aquarium in the USA.  Experience IMAX, the ultimate film which is bigger, bolder and better on a screen six stories tall.  Have lunch on-your-own in Bluff Arts, Chattanooga's first art district which stretches over 1.5 city blocks, set high atop stone cliffs that plunge into the river below. From this bluff-top location, you will have breathtaking views of the Tennessee River, as well as downtown Chattanooga.

  • Lecture Forum Series:  A Rivertown's Fight for Life -    January 18,  Dr. Pete Sparks, a local authority on the War Between the States and its impact on Marshall County,  will discuss his new book, "A River Town's Fight for Life--A History of the Civil War in Marshall County." Dr. Sparks will recount the Forrest/Streight raid.  Following a major conflict in middle Tennessee Union Col. Abel Streight decided to make a daring raid  that would lead his men across North Alabama and into Georgia with the intention of cutting the Western Atlantic Railroad. On his way from Memphis to Georgia, Streight met the famous Confederate General Nathan  B. Forrest, who engaged the Union leader in a number of battles.  
         Dr. Sparks will explain the January 15, 1865 bombardment of Guntersville and the river.
         Dr. Sparks will have his new book available to purchase and autograph after the lecture.
         January 18, 10am, no charge.
     

  • How to Use Tech Toys   January 17 & 24, 10am The first class will focus on Apple/Mac products.  2nd class will discuss all brands of  e-readers and smartphones.  Jeff Sievers will unlock their mysteries & teach you how to use them.  Bring your portable devices for Jeff to help you with individual questions.  $10.

  • Self-Compassion for Caregivers - Most of us are quite practiced at being supportive and giving to others, but how many of us offer that same level of compassion and care to ourselves?   Dr. Mary Groff, psychotherapist and pastoral counselor, will teach you how to get through difficult situations and have peace of mind. 3 Thurs starting January 19, 1pm, $15.

  • Watercolor Class - Back by popular demand—learn the basics of watercolor painting from color mixing to using and controlling your watercolor brush.  Judy Chalmers will help you explore the spontaneity of the watercolor medium. 6 sessions will meet Fridays 1-3pm, January 20-February 27.  Cost of the class is $60 which includes all resource materials, paints, brushes and paper.

  •  First Aid/CPR/AED    January 24, 8am-Noon, $5, American Heart certification, Adult, child and infant CPR.

  • Book Club  would like for you to join them on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 1pm.  No charge.  Each member is responsible for getting and reading the book selection.  Come and join them!  Angela Otts moderator.  January 24, “American Lion”, Jon Meacham;  February 28, “Island of Saints”, Andy Andrews;  March 27, “Corduroy Mansion”, Alexander McCall Smith.  This year’s selections have an international flavor.

  • How to Dress for Your Shape:  Does this make me look fat?  Decorator and fashion guru for the over 50 set, Ann Dowdy, will give fashion tips and examples.  February 1, 9am.  Learn your shape and dress to flatter it,  $5. 

  • Cost Cutting Coupons:   Lynne Bell will teach about different types of coupons.  Explain policies for coupons.  Websites for finding coupons.  Using coupons effectively will save you money!  February 15 10am, $5

  • Scrapbooking:  Get started scrapbooking with Joan Lott.  Bring 2-3 photos to make a scrapbook page.  Choose between a Heritage Page (grandparents) or a Baby Page.  All supplies provided $10, Feb 22, 9am.

  • Introduction to Tatting:  LouAnn Poole will get you started tatting, a technique for handcrafting lace with a series of knots and loops which dates to the early 19th century.  All supplies provided, $15. March 8, 15 & 22 at 10am.

  • Intermediate Dulcimer:  Pat Jex will teach a 4-week class, Tuesdays at 9am starting March 6This class is for those who have finished the Beginner class and want more instruction before joining the Thursday morning practice group.  Each student will need a dulcimer, music stand, and tuner.  Upon request, these can be borrowed from RSVP during the 4-week class.  Cost $20.

  • RSVP Chorus:  meets on Tuesdays at 1:30pm starting back after Chritamas break on January 17th.  Come join the fun and fellowship, no auditions.  Starting lots of new music.  Need tenors, basses, sopranos and altos.  Charles Bradley, director, and Ann Jones, pianist. 

  • New at RSVP -- RSVP's Book Nook Have you been into RSVP to see our new addition?  RSVP has created a Book Nook in the back hallway featuring used books that have been donated on a “Read—Enjoy—Return” policy.  Come in and find a book to read.  On the Honor System - no library card to sign out the book - return the book when you have finished it and take another one.

  • Day Trip - "Dixie Tupperware Party"  Theatre Matinee , Huntsville, AL, February 11 , Depart RSVP 11:30am, Return Approx 5pm, Cost $45.50     Begin your Tupperware party with lunch on your own at the Blue Plate Cafe in Huntsville, then on to Merrimack Hall (originally built in 1898 and expanded in 1920 by the Merrimack Manufacturing Company, a large textile manufacturer who had two large textile mills and a thriving mill village in Huntsville) to see the 2pm matinee.       The TODAY Show says,  “not your grandmother’s Tupperware party”.  This show contains adult themes and is recommended for mature audiences.     Cost $45.50, includes matinee and transportation.  Minimum 10 people.

  • Day Trip - Chocolate Day at the Botanical Gardens, Huntsville, AL, March 3,  Depart RSVP 11am, Return 5pm, Cost $30     Lunch on-you-own at Gibson’s  Barbecue, started in 1956.  Have your dessert at the Garden by joining the 2pm decadent sampling of treats in the Arbor.  Enjoy luscious chocolate treats from vendors throughout the Valley.  There will also be entertainment and a botany of chocolate display.  After the tasting, 3pm tour the early spring gardens.       Cost $30, includes garden admission, one-hour chocolate tasting and transportation.  Minimum 10.

  • Mountain Dulcimer Practice Group:  Welcomes people of all skill levels to practice each Thursday morning at 9am for beginners, 10am slow jam and 11am intermediate jam.

  • Current Affairs Cafe:       An hour of coffee, good conversation on issues of the day and a joke or two.  Every Thursday morning from 9-10am, RSVP will host a weekly discussion of current affairs in our community, state and country.
         Discussion will be centered on articles in newspapers, magazines or on the Internet.  All subjects have to be published within the week of the meeting.  Clip the article and make copies for everyone before the meeting.  This can be done at RSVP.
         Each member will take a turn bringing in a current topic to discuss and get opinions on.  There can also be a short round-table discussion on any current topics about which members feel strongly.  At the end of each meeting, a member will offer the joke of the day, and everyone can leave with a smile.  Angela Otts is the facilitator.
         Coffee will be served.  Members might want to bring a biscuit for themselves or volunteer to bring a treat for the group.  Members may bring a mug with their name on it to leave at RSVP. 

  • Spanish Conversation Club meets every Wednesday for 9:30-11:30.

  • RSVP PC User Group will meet the third Monday of each month from 1:15—3:15 pm. 

  • Lake Guntersville Computer Club  meets on the last Saturday of every month from 10am—noon.  They would like for you to join them. 

  • Lake Watch Signup Form to download a Word document signup form, click on this link Lake Watch Signup Form.doc   then fill out the form, save it, and email it back to mcrsvp@mcrsvp.org as an attachment or block, copy and paste it into the body of the email.

  • Norma Nicholas, an RSVP volunteer, will be offering a Duplicate Bridge game each Thursday at 12:30pm.   Join a very relaxed group just learning to play duplicate bridge.  The atmosphere is wonderful.    Each week instruction on various aspects of bridge will be offered 45 minutes before the 12:30pm game.     Newcomers, retirees, and anyone who wants to keep mentally active and make new friends is welcome.   Classes and games are offered at no charge. 

  • Want to learn to Knit or Crochet or socialize with women who do? The Gene Clark Care and Share group meets every Tuesday from 9 to 11am at RSVP (new location).

  • RSVP Quilting Groups would like for you to join them from 9 - noon to quilt or to learn. Albertville - every 2nd & 4th Tuesday at the Albertville Rec Center. Arab - every 1st and 3rd Mondays at the Senior Center. Boaz - every 1st & 3rd Friday at the old Boaz Senior Center. Grant - every 1st & 3rd Wednesday at Mtn. Pleasant Community Bldg. Guntersville - every 2nd & 4thThursday at RSVP.
